Chairs with stained seats and painted backs are very popular and look amazing! Unfortunately, with the multi colors, that means there can be a lot of taping around spindles to prevent intermixing of the colors.
Maybe it's not chairs your painting but rather stair railings or, well, anything with spindles. If you have ever painted something with spindles then you know how time consuming it can be to tape them off.
I am here to share with you the easiest and quickest way I have found to tape off spindles.
First, and most importantly, make sure you use the correct tape. Never use duct tape or packing tape as it will leave tape residue and possible lift any paint or finish underneath it. Painters tape is a must have for any painting project.
Place two pieces of painters tape on each side of the spindle. The tape I was using was on the wider side so I cut mine in half.
Next, place another two pieces perpendicular to the two you just laid down. You should now have formed a square with the tape.
What you will now have is four small areas that still need to be covered.
Take four pieces of tape and cover those exposed areas.
You're all done!
Just like wrapping presents, having someone cut and hand you the tape makes the process go extremely quick!
Always remember to remove the tape as soon as you are done painting. You run the risk of your paint sealing to the tape and may lift the paint off when the tape is removed.
Have fun restoring your furniture!
